LATE OCTOBER
Lyn Lifshin

a cross camouflaged
under leaves slippery
as ice. The squirrels
are everywhere. I
think of her words,
air as soon as they
were spoken. In weeks
the pond will come
back, waves of brown
richness, stunning
for a moment as
a young girl’s skin
pushed by time

EARLY NOVEMBER
Lyn Lifshin

it snowed in a dream
and by dawn impatiens
were dripping. A month
of horses, the ones
wild to run, the ones
coming home. Oak
leaves, acorns, bracelet
the pond. I went to
sleep and it was summer.
I dreamt of horses
running on the beach
in snow, their manes
pale rhinestones
