Walter Benjamin wrote about the loss of aura, of authenticity, that results from being in an age of mechanical reproduction. Because we can reproduce art photographically, art loses its air of uniqueness. Whenever we see the original, we have probably already seen some other version of it. We think we know what to expect. We cannot be awestruck by the expected.
