Triptych: The Canary Sings
/Giana Loboda
I.
The canary sings in the cheerful morn,
of beloved babes yet unborn.
The canary sings in the fair daylight,
as beloved babes take first flight.
The canary sings in the stormy eve,
of fallen babes and begins to grieve.
The canary sings in the lonely night,
a mourning song of a mother’s plight.
Seasons pass yet the mother remains,
singing of sorrows that act as her chains.
II.
The
first
bud
breaks
through
the
ground
in
new
spring.
III.
The stirring songbird
begins to sing.
A peaceful song
of what has passed.
A hopeful song
for what is to come.
An eternal song
of a mother’s love.
Though grief has clipped her wings
still
the canary sings.
